How to Draw a Succulent in 6 Easy Steps

Welcome! Are you struggling to find an easy way to draw a succulent? Are you tired of step-by-step tutorials that leave out half of the actual steps? Me to! So I created this literal step-by-step tutorial for you to follow along and draw a spectacular succulent!

All you need to get started is a pen or pencil and your journal or paper. Are you ready? Let’s draw together!

If you want to see my top picks for pens to use in your bullet journal, check out this post!

Step 1 - Draw a Pot

Decide what you want your succulent plant to be in. A pot, a bowl, or a teacup. For this tutorial, let’s go with an easy pot.

Draw a square with the top and bottom lines slightly rounded to give it a round appearance like a flower pot.

Step 2 - Draw the First Petal

Once you draw your pot, start at the center of the top line and draw your first succulent petal. See the picture for an example.

Step 3 - Finish the First Layer of Petals

On both sides of the center petal, add petals that point outward across the top of the pot. This will complete the base of the succulent.

Step 4 - Add the Next Layer of Petals

Draw the same style of petals just above the first row of petals you created. Then, add them in between each petal on the first row. See the example and give it a go!

Step 5 - Finishing Up the Petals

You are almost done! Next, draw two or three more petals on the next row up like you did in the last step. Place these petals in between the previous petals to finish off the succulent. Again, draw whatever looks balanced to you.

Step 6 - Adding the Details

Finally, you can add little inky details to make it unique! I took a smaller tipped fine liner and added small detail lines to the petals. Then, I decorated my pot! Choose a pattern you love, or color it in any way you like.
